RRCA Joins National Physical Activity Plan

Arlington, VA - The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), an organization with a long history of promoting physical activity, has joined The National Physical Activity Plan as an Organizational Partner. Organizational Partners play a central role in all aspects of the development, launch and implementation of the National Physical Activity Plan.

Russ Pate, Chair of the National Plan Coordinating Committee said, “The RRCA is positioned to provide exceptional leadership in developing The Plan and in implementing it in communities across the nation.”

“The RRCA has a strategic goal to increase our national advocacy efforts on behalf of the running community and to be a major, collaborative partner with health organizations seeking to promote the importance of regular exercise,” explained Jean Knaack, RRCA executive director. “The RRCA’s involvement with the development and implementation of the National Physical Activity Plan enables our organization to take an increased leadership role in promoting running as a healthy exercise choice for the American population.”

ABOUT THE NATIONAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PLAN:
Important progress has been made in establishing physical activity as a public health priority in the United States. Nonetheless, there has been very little success in increasing physical activity at the population level.

A comprehensive plan for promoting physical activity in the American population would provide the framework to support a broad and comprehensive national effort to increase physical activity throughout the population.

National plans have been undertaken with considerable success in other health domains. The current prevalence of and costs related to chronic disease, including obesity, make it dramatically evident that the time has come for the US to adopt a National Plan for Physical Activity as many other nations have already done.

The National Physical Activity Plan is a growing collection of organizations and individuals dedicated to developing a plan that will empower all Americans to be physically active every day. With a comprehensive network of resources that continues to expand, we are gaining momentum towards meeting our ultimate goal of increasing physical activity nationwide. Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Prevention Research Center at the University of South Carolina are providing the organizational infrastructure for The Plan.

The National Physical Activity Plan has a coordinating committee comprised of leading experts in a variety of fields important to the development of the Plan. RRCA Executive Director, Jean Knaack, has been named to serve as a member of the coordinating committee.

Goals for the National Plan for Physical Activity will include:
• Making a compelling and urgent case for increasing physical activity in the American population.
• Providing a clear roadmap for actions that support short and long term progress in increasing Americans’ physical activity.
• Developing strategies for increasing physical activity in all population subgroups and reducing disparities across subgroups.
• Creating a sustained and resourced social movement that provides for ongoing coordination, partnerships, capacity building, and evaluation.
• Developing new and innovative strategies for promoting physical activity.
• Undergoing periodic evaluation to assess achievements in increasing physical activity.
