Using Celebrities

USING CELEBRITIES OF THE SLOWER SORT

Some races look for celebrities who are not known as fast runners but still capture the public’s interest. Years ago, the Crescent City Classic 10k in New Orleans received more “ink” from bringing in the “Playboy Racing Team” than from being the USATF National 10k Championship. Similarly, talk show host Oprah Winfrey’s run at the Marine Corps Marathon was a huge media generator. The NYRRC has recruited personalities ranging from sex expert Dr. Ruth to former heavyweight champion Ingomar Johannsen, to rapper P.Diddy, to Lance Armstrong (not really of the slower sort). If you import a celebrity, make sure you brief them on the message you want the media to hear. The real "professionals" among the celebrities will know exactly what you mean and will make sure to say exactly what you want them to say. Encourage them to be positive about their experience and the sport of distance running in general.
